Torah: Blessing or Curse?

I’ll never forget when my eyes started to open towards my identity in Messiah, as I was reading the account of the “Second Passover” in King Hezekiah’s day. From there, Father would begin to reveal to me the pattern of all of humanity – forgetting. When men forget who they are and what they exist to do, they do all kinds of things. They break commandments in order to become like Elohim (Genesis 3.) They mix with angelic beings (Genesis 6.) They build towers to ascend to the highest heaven (Genesis 11.) They establish religious laws that exalt themselves over Yahweh (Matthew 12, 23; Luke 11:42.) The list is endless.

Yet throughout all of these accounts, another thread is always found as well. There are always men – a remnant - who remember. These men tear down their father’s idolatry (2 Kings 23.) They clean out the Temple. They reinstate Yahweh’s Feasts. They bring back in the priesthood. (2 Chron. 29) They call out religious traditions of men. They continue to point back to the ancient way, that the prophet Jeremiah tells us to find and walk in (2 Kings 22.)

In this last reference specifically, we see King Josiah clearly depict a pattern that is resurging in this hour, throughout the entire earth. Let’s read: When the king heard the words of the Book of the Torah, he tore his clothes.  Then the king [was found saying to the priests], “Go, inquire of Yahweh for me and for the people and all Judah concerning the words of this book that has been found, for the wrath of Yahweh that burns against us is great, because our fathers did not listen to the words of this Book, to act in accordance with everything that is written regarding us (vs. 11-13.)

People all over the earth are discovering that their identity is much greater than they were ever told, in modern Christian doctrines. It is ancient. It is, as we’ve been speaking to in the latest “Olam” video series, from generation to generation. Many, like myself, have been brought to repentance, like Josiah and found asking, “Why hasn’t anyone told us this?!” We then embark into a rediscovery of something. Something that has been - to get back to our beginning here today – forgotten. Yahweh’s Torah is His character. If we abandon it piece by piece, we abandon components of Who He is.

The Sabbath is the perfect example of this. Seventh Day Sabbath, even included in “the Ten” has been forgotten. This is, of course, exactly why it is the only commandment that Yahweh told us to “remember.” Those who call themselves “the Church” have failed at perpetuating the conditions of a People. All is merely about individual salvation now. Even though the Bible does not speak to this at all, it has become the norm and the Body has suffered greatly for it. We have no corporate identity. No truly unified direction. The  very ones that claim to be “God’s People” have literally become lawless, just as Yeshua predicted (Matthew 24:12.)

So what about us? Have you inherited an incorrect understanding of what Yahweh’s Torah was, and is? Have you been errantly told that it was “a burden that no man can bear?” Study your Bible and see if this is true. Look into the innumerable teachings that are literally everywhere online and be willing to ask hard questions. See if this Torah, that David knew and loved so well, really is perfect, reviving the soul. Selah.

Why do you think that we have been taught that God's commands have become a curse in Jesus?

I would suggest that poor handling and interpreting of Scripture is the main issue. We simply regurgitate what we've been handed by previous generations, whether it is true or not. Prominent doctrine tells us that Jesus "did away with the Torah", so that's the lens that most read the Bible through. (Even though He never once states this of course.)

We have been told that Torah is a "burdensome" Law that no man could ever keep. This directly opposes countless Scriptures and would eliminate Yeshua Himself as One who could "keep the commandments" of His Father. Unless... Yeshua is made into some super-human deity that was "above the Law", which, again, opposes the Bible entirely.

Great question!
