In John chapter 4 we see Messiah engaging with a woman at a well. The layers of interest with this account are absolutely endless. In order to only focus on one, I’d like to highlight the disciples inability to see what was unfolding here. Instead of asking Messiah to explain His actions, they merely want to talk about lunch. We can envision their dialogue as they conversed. “Are you hungry Master?” "He said He's not hungry!" “Who gave Him some food? Was it you?” “I was going to bring Him lunch today!”
Despite what they were witnessing, they just didn’t see the purpose and, in this case, they didn’t even bother to ask either. When most men were set beside Yeshua during His brief life in the flesh, they fall quite short. As we look back and see how even His taught ones behaved, when next to Him, we travel forward through time and see our own need and lack. Or at least we should.
Now contrast this with the Samaritan woman’s level of inquiry. In this case, this woman, who had no business even talking with the prophesied Messiah, had no problems asking the right questions. I find this quite intriguing and part of the entire point. The ones who will find the Salvation of Yahweh are those who receive It when It comes. It is not about who one is or what one has done. It is however all about being willing to receive “the spring of water welling up to eternal life” from the only One who can being it to men – Yahweh, who is our Salvation.
