Do You Speak Yahweh's Great Name?

 

Roughly five years ago now my wife started asking, “Why don’t we ever speak the Name of ‘God’? Why do we never literally say or sing His Name? He has a Name and I want to shout It!”

Oh, what wonderful questions! We had already long left behind Christmas, Easter and all of the other endless holidays of men. But her questions, alongside Father’s revealing of His Ancient Way to us, launched us into an incredible shift of knowing Yahweh, in a way that we had never known Him before. There is great intimacy within knowing, and speaking, a name.

Recently our family was listening to a song that has Deuteronomy chapter 8 as the lyrics. It is however using a modern translation and repeats “God, our God” several times. Our son made the comment, “that doesn’t even make any sense. Why would they say that that way? Why don’t people say Yahweh’s Name?” he’s right. After saying and hearing the Name of Yahweh for the majority of his older childhood years now, he’s right. He gets it.

And his question is one that deserves answering. Of course I’ve been told things like, “Well, He knows who I’m talking to” more times than I could ever count. But this is missing the point entirely. As today’s text shows us, His Great Name is worthy of being upon our lips. The Word is overflowing with references to the power of speaking His Great Name. And guess what? His Great Name is Yahweh, not “Great Name!” It makes no sense whatsoever to say the words “His Great Name” yet never utter His Great Name - Yahweh.

What about you, friend? Do you speak the wonderful, revealed Name of Yahweh? Do you sing and ascribe praises to Yahweh specifically? Upon studying His Name years ago, I quickly found that “god” is a very generic term, by itself. It always has been. If one was to say the title “god” thousands of years ago, no one would ever have known who you’re talking about. There are thousands of gods. I believe this is still true. Our Elohim has a Name. Yahweh!

Can one fulfil these Scriptures yet never speak His specific Name? I don't believe so. The Word is quite explicit.

If you only say the name “god”, please consider asking, why? His Name is great and He is worthy! His mighty acts are in order to ascribe greatness and majesty to His Great Name - Yahweh! Let us all be found doing our individual part to honor and fulfil His Word and why He does His mighty acts among men – to magnify His Great Name. Selah.
